Today’s finalist preview comes from Our Lady’s Secondary School. Along with their extensive extra-curricular music tuition, choir, traditional group and bands that meet at lunchtime or after school, the school also plans to set up guitar and percussion ensembles, as well as a dance troupe to accompany the trad group. Their entry is a medley of popular songs and traditional airs performed by the 80-strong OLSS Performing Arts Group of instrumentalists and singers.
Continuing our previews of finalists in our schools competition, we have Kilcoe National School in Skibbereen, a small rural disadvantaged primary school, that provides every single student in the school with the opportunity to make music. Tin whistle is taught to all classes, and there is an after-school programme of tuition in other traditional instruments. The school plans to develop a choir and expose children to other music genres, and it would use a Waltons Music for Schools Prize to get a range of instruments that could be lent/rented to children
Their entry is a medley of traditional tunes and airs, performed by all 54 students of this 54-student school!
Continuing our finalists previews, we have post-primary finalist Cashel Community School, Tipperary, who in addition to curricular music to Leaving Cert. level, offers a wide range of music-making opportunities for its students, including three choirs and trad, percussion, brass and string ensembles. One of their really fine and original ideas for encouraging regular music making during school hours is holding ‘Buskers Concerts’ outside the music room at lunchtimes. Their entry is ‘Winter Fire & Snow’, performed by the 15-strong school Chamber Choir and guitarists.
