Gibson USA honors Les Paul, the avid inventor, expert player, creative sound engineer, and Gibson’s long-time partner by making 2013 ‘The Year of Les Paul’. Six Primary and six Post-primary schools from Counties Galway, Cork, Laois, Monaghan, Dublin, Limerick, Clare and Wicklow have made the finals of the competition and will be competing at the National Concert Hall on Monday, April 8th, to win first, second and third prize Waltons vouchers for €3000, €1500 and €500 worth of musical instruments and equipment. Last night we saw the magic of Bobby McFerrin working ‘in the moment’ with the gorgeous dancer Máire Dee and an inspired group of musicians including Kate Ellis, Robbie Harris, Emer Mayock, Úna Ní Fhlannagáin, Nick Roth, John Sweeney and Francesco Turrisi. You really had to be there to appreciate this fantastic collaboration in making music ‘in the moment’. There’s another chance to experience this amazing musical event – there are still some tickets available for tonight’s performance when Bobby will be singing, dancing and playing with a new combination of artists including Cindy Cummings – Dancer; Kate Ellis – Cello; Robbie Harris – Bodhrán; JPTrio (Ted Kelly, Jos Kelly, Paddy Hazleton) – Banjo, Button Accordion, Cajón Kit; Emer Mayock – Irish Flute; Francesco Turrisi – Piano, Accordion, Percussion.

Remember that the Waltons Music for Schools competition is an annual one, so if your school wasn’t a finalist this year, start thinking of your entry for 2014!
At last, the day has come for all those schools who entered the 2013 Waltons Music for Schools Competition! Lorcan Murray will be announcing the 12 fantastic finalists – 6 Primary schools and 6 Post-primary schools – who have been selected by Waltons and Lyric fm to perform in the National Concert Hall on the 8th April, 2013. Congratulations to all the schools who entered – the entries were absolutely wonderful – and if you didn’t make it to the final this year, we’ll look forward to seeing you in 2014!
