Fender Introduces Modern Player Series Guitars and Basses

Throughout its history, Fender has always made a special point of welcoming new players to the family by offering entry-level instruments of remarkable style and substance (such as the Duo-Sonic™, Mustang® and Musicmaster® models), with great sound, classic looks, solid performance and eminent affordability.

The new Modern Player series continues that great “my-first-Fender” tradition, with thoroughly modern features and several distinctively unconventional new takes on our most revered instruments—all with outstandingly attainable value. The Modern Player series holds a few surprises in store, too—including the long-awaited return of an acclaimed Fender bass guitar model not seen since the 1970s (back now in potently hot-rodded fashion), an unrelentingly lean-and-mean version of the venerable Jaguar® guitar, the resurrection of a fabled and seldom-heard Fender name from the 1960s for a scorching new guitar model, an utterly volcanic new Jazz Bass® with dual humbucking pickups, and a powerful new take on the acclaimed modern-era Jaguar Bass—back in the ring with a versatile new pickup combination and streamlined control configuration.

There are seven instruments in the series; four guitars and three basses. They are Modern Player Telecaster® Plus HSS, Modern Player Telecaster Thinline Deluxe, Modern Player Jaguar, Modern Player Marauder, Modern Player Telecaster Bass, Modern Player Jazz Bass and Modern Player Jaguar Bass. The Modern Player Telecaster Plus HSS is that rare bird among Telecasters—a triple-pickup model—further distinguished by a pine body and mini-toggle coil-split switch for the Modern Player humbucking bridge pickup. Other features include C-shaped maple neck, maple fretboard with 9.5” radius and 22 jumbo frets, Modern Player single-coil Telecaster neck pickup and Modern Player Stratocaster middle pickup, five-way pickup switching, three-ply pickguard, knurled “chrome-dome” control knobs, vintage-style Stratocaster string-through-body six-saddle hard-tail bridge, vintage-style tuners and nickel/chrome hardware. It comes in Honey Burst and Charcoal Transparent. The Modern Player Telecaster Thinline Deluxe casts an already distinctive classic Telecaster model in a whole new light with a full-throated pair of single-coil Modern Player MP-90 pickups. Other features include a mahogany body, C-shaped maple neck, maple fretboard with 9.5” radius and 22 medium jumbo frets, three-way toggle pickup switching, three-ply pickguard (parchment on Sunburst model; black-white-black on other models), four skirted amp knobs (two volume, two tone), vintage-style Stratocaster string-through-body six-saddle hard-tail bridge, vintage-style tuners and nickel/chrome hardware. It’s available in Three-color Sunburst, Black Transparent and Vintage White. The Modern Player series Telecaster Bass. The Modern Player Jaguar is a lean, mean and stripped-down version of the classic Fender model, with a full-throated pair of single-coil Modern Player MP-90 pickups on a sans-pickguard mahogany body. Other features include a C-shaped maple neck, rosewood fretboard with 9.5” radius and 21 medium jumbo frets, three-way toggle pickup switching, Jazz Bass-style control knobs, vintage-style Adjusto-Matic™ bridge with anchored tailpiece, vintage-style tuners and nickel/chrome hardware. It’s available in Two-color Chocolate Burst, Red Transparent and Black Transparent. In addition to heralding the return of a fabled and seldom-heard Fender name from the 1960s, the Modern Player Marauder is one of the most distinctive new guitars in the family, uniquely marked by a new body style, Modern Player Jazzmaster® neck pickup and volcanic-sounding three-coil Fender Triplebucker bridge pickup. Other features include a koto body, C-shaped maple neck, rosewood fretboard with 22 jumbo frets, five-way pickup switching with lower horn blade selector switch, four-ply aged white pearloid pickguard, Jazz Bass-style control knobs, vintage-style synchronized tremolo bridge, vintage-style tuners and nickel/chrome hardware. The Modern Player Marauder comes in Black and Lake Placid Blue. A classic Fender bass design returns with an unusual new twist delivering utterly seismic sound. The Telecaster Bass is back at last in the smart new form of the Modern Player Telecaster Bass, which boasts not one but two massive humbucking pickups. Features include an alder body, C-shaped maple neck, maple fretboard with 9.5” radius and 20 medium jumbo frets, dual Modern Player Wide Range humbucking Precision Bass® pickups, three-ply parchment (Sunburst model) or single-ply black (Butterscotch Blonde model) pickguard, three knurled “chrome-dome” control knobs (neck volume, bridge volume, master tone), vintage-style bridge with four brass saddles, open-gear tuners and nickel/chrome hardware. It’s back in Two-color Sunburst and Butterscotch Blonde. The Modern Player Jazz Bass is a volcanic new take on the time-honored Jazz Bass thanks to its dual Modern Player humbucking Jazz Bass pickups. Other features include an alder body, C-shaped maple neck, rosewood fretboard with 9.5” radius and 20 jumbo frets, three-ply pickguard, vintage-style four-saddle bridge with brass saddles, open-gear tuners and nickel/chrome hardware. It comes in Three-color Sunburst, Olympic White and Black Transparent. Finally, the acclaimed Fender Jaguar Bass is back in the sleek form the Modern Player Jaguar Bass, which presents a lean, mean and stripped-down version of the model with a powerful P/J configuration—a Modern Player Precision Bass middle pickup and Modern Player Jazz Bass bridge pickup—and streamlined control layout. Features include a koto body, C-shaped maple neck, maple fretboard with 9.5” radius and 20 jumbo frets, three-ply parchment pickguard, three Jazz Bass control knobs (middle volume, bridge volume, master tone), vintage-style four-saddle bridge with brass saddles, open-gear tuners and nickel/chrome hardware. The Modern Player Jaguar Bass is available in Black. For more details, view Fender product page. here

New from Gibson USA: Les Paul Deluxe & New Les Paul Junior (Gloss)

Les Paul Deluxe Throughout the classic-rock era of the 1970s, if you mentioned “Les Paul” to a guitarist they usually heard “Deluxe.” Made in the image of the original single-cutaway set-neck Les Paul Standard of 1958 to ’60 but with a pair of mini-humbucking pickups for the brighter, more cutting tone that many players were demanding, the Les Paul Deluxe ruled the roost for the better part of a decade, and found an enduring place in the hearts of guitarists and collectors alike that has held fast ever since. Crafted in the image of the most revered version of this model from the early ’70s, the Les Paul Deluxe newly recreated by Gibson USA offers all the ingredients that helped this instrument stand out from the crowd, including traditional tonewoods and electronics, superb playability and first-class Gibson craftsmanship. And it’s all wrapped in a high-gloss Goldtop nitrocellulose finish to give it the look of the best-loved rendition of the Deluxes of old. To set a firm foundation for tone, Gibson USA crafts the Les Paul Deluxe with the same tonewoods used in the most beloved example of the model from the 1970s. A carved maple top is glued to a Grade-A mahogany body that is strategically chambered to both enhance tone and reduce weight. A Grade-A quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved to a comfortably rounded profile that measures .818″ deep at the 1st fret and .963″ at the 12th. It is capped with a premium Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and a radius of 12″ for easy choke-free bending. Cream plastic binding provides a smooth feel and a classic look. To anchor it all down there’s a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece—two innovative classics of Gibson hardware—and a set of vintage-look Tone Pros® Keystone Vintage tuners with efficient 16:1 gear ratios. All the ringing resonance and sustain wrought by these ingredients are transmitted to the amp with optimum depth and clarity by a pair of Gibson’s legendary mini-humbucking pickups. The Les Paul Deluxe mini-humbuckers are made much like full-sized PAF-style humbuckers with genuine Alnico II magnets but with narrower coils and slightly fewer turns of wire for a sharper, more focused sound. They are perfect for cutting through a heavy band mix, while also going confidently into twangy and jangly genres that Les Pauls aren’t usually thought to excel at, without sacrificing any of the depth and muscle that makes a great Les Paul what it is. Routed through the traditional complement of two independent volume controls and two independent tone controls and three-way toggle switch—and a great locking Neutrick® output jack for total plugged-in security—these pickups provide stunning tonal versatility. Put it all together—along with the gold Speed Knobs, “Deluxe” engraved truss-rod cover and LP Deluxe pickguard – all marks of the breed—and you’ve got an evocative recreation of a model that helped make today’s rock what it is. Each Les Paul Deluxe from Gibson USA comes with a plush-lined hardshell case, owner’s manual, warranty and adjustment literature.

Les Paul Junior

The simple, no-nonsense Les Paul Junior has long been a favorite for everything from down and dirty rock and roll, to meanstreet blues, to raw garage punk. With a light all-mahogany body and one roaring P-90 pickup, this guitar is totally down to business, while surprisingly versatile. Now Gibson USA introduces the Les Paul Junior in three great new finishes—TV Yellow, Pelham Blue, and Tobacco Burst—all in genuine nitrocellulose lacquer and hand buffed to a high gloss. Simple, screaming, superbly playable and undeniably hip, the Les Paul Junior has been a force to be reckoned with since 1954, and it’s still a powerhouse here in the 21st century.

Just like the first Junior to roll off the line in Kalamazoo 57 years ago, the Les Paul Junior from Gibson USA is made from choice solid mahogany. An archetypal tonewood used in countless classic Gibson electric guitars, mahogany has a sonic depth and richness that can’t be beat, yet always remains clear and articulate. The guitar’s neck is also made from solid mahogany cut to the superior quarter-sawn orientation, carved to the fast yet comfortable SlimTaper™ profile, and glued into the body with the time-tested mortise & tenon joint that promotes resonance and sustain. It carries a rich, dark Obeche fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and a 12-inch radius for easy, choke-free bending. A PLEK-cut Corian nut ensures precise intonation while enhancing sustain, which is further aided by Gibson’s traditional 17-degree back-angled headstock, silkscreened with the gold Gibson logo and “LP Model,” just like the originals.

The heart of the Les Paul Junior has always been found in its hot, raw P-90 pickup, and this guitar is no different. This accurate reproduction of Gibson’s favorite single-coil pickup is wound with 42-AWG wire and employs a pair of genuine Alnico V bar magnets for a sound that is equally as smooth as it is snarly, with characteristic P-90 edge and bite to cut through any mix. Hardware includes a “lightning bar” wraparound tailpiece with raised compensated saddle ridge for improved intonation and vintage-style tuners with white plastic buttons retain the retro styling up at the headstock. Every Les Paul Junior comes protected in a padded Gibson gigbag and includes an owner’s manual

Gibson USA introduce new Les Paul Studio Swirl Model

Les Paul Studio Swirl

The Les Paul Studio Swirl is a stunning new addition to the popular Studio series, which has been bringing full-fledged Les Paul performance and tone to hard-working musicians since its introduction in 1983. These guitars include all the classic ingredients that have made the Les Paul Standard legendary since humbuckers first hit the model 1957, but add four exotic swirl finishes to the formula, while retaining the down-to-business package that is light on frills, heavy on swagger, and easy on the pocket. Not one element of construction or component quality is sacrificed to bring you this high-performance electric guitar, and the Gibson USA Les Paul Studio Swirl might just be the most head-turning Studio model ever produced.

A handful of cosmetic simplifications help to bring this Les Paul in at a truly astounding price. A minimalist finishing process results in a thin nitrocellulose finish in one of four gorgeous new “swirl” options: Black/Green Swirl, Black/Silver Swirl, Gold/Blue Swirl, and Silver/Blue Swirl. A lack of binding around the body top and fingerboard also gives a tactile, organic look and feel to the instrument as a whole. Where tone and performance are concerned, however, the Studio Swirl model stays right in the legendary Les Paul Standard’s wheelhouse, with the timeless hardware that has helped to make Les Pauls total sustain monsters for more than five decades. The pickups are a pair of Gibson’s most popular humbuckers, a 490R in the neck and a 498T in the bridge, both made with 42-AWG wire and genuine Alnico magnets (Alnico II and Alnico V respectively) just like the original PAF humbuckers. Wrap it all up, and it’s an unparalleled package for anyone from the discerning studio musician to the hard-touring artist in search of a no-nonsense tone machine that stands out on the stage. And at this price, there’s no reason not to check out the Les Paul Studio Swirl today—and make it your very own.

Just like the most revered Les Paul Standards of all time, this Les Paul Studio Swirl starts with the classic tonewood combination of a mahogany body with solid carved maple top. Together, these woods offer outstanding tonal depth and richness from the mahogany, with superb clarity and “snap” from the maple. In this model, the strategic placement of several tone chambers enhances resonance while also reducing the guitar’s overall weight considerably, without sacrificing an ounce of punch or sustain. And even in this more affordable instrument from Gibson USA, the glued-in solid-mahogany neck is cut to the superior “quarter-sawn” grain orientation for superior strength and optimum resonance transfer between neck and body. For the fingerboard, Gibson USA uses exotic Obeche, a hard-wearing dark wood that is not unlike Ebony wood in appearance.

To further maximize all that vibrational energy, Gibson includes its legendary Tune-o-matic bridge and stud-mounted Stop Bar tailpiece, arguably the most storied hardware combination in the history of the electric guitar. Designed to allow precise intonation of individual strings for perfectly in-tune playing, this bridge and tailpiece pairing also provides rock-solid string anchoring at the body end. Of course, to make optimum use of all that sweet resonance and singing sustain you need a couple of superb pickups, and the Les Paul Studio Swirl with Maple Top carries a pair of the very best: a 490R in the neck position gives you warm, rich tones with outstanding clarity, while a slightly hotter 498T is great for singing solos and crunchy rhythm parts. Both are made with genuine Alnico magnets, and feature wax-potted coils to squelch microphonic squeal at high volumes.

All this tonal splendor would do you little good without superb playability, and the Les Paul Studio Swirl excels in this department, too. A rounded ’50s neck profile is extremely comfortable in the hand while still fast and supple under the fingertips, and the fingerboard’s 12-inch radius and 22 medium-jumbo frets offer easy bending with no choking out. To top it all off, the Les Paul Studio Swirl with Maple Top looks great in your choice of Black/Green Swirl, Black/Silver Swirl, Gold/Blue Swirl, and Silver/Blue Swirl finish, all in genuine nitrocellulose lacquer, naturally. All this, and your guitar comes protected in a Gibson Hardshell case

Epiphone release new Ultra Les Paul: Ultra III

The Ultra-III – Where Tradition Meets Technology: We all know that deep down, most guitarists love classic designs and shapes. That’s why we designed the new Les Paul Ultra-III with the same look and features of a traditional Les Paul but added new technology giving you a guitar that’s still a real Les Paul but also so much more!

Two Great Pickup Systems in One Guitar: At the heart of the new Ultra-III are two pickup systems. Powering the first are Epiphone’s new ProBucker™ humbucking pickups patterned after Gibson’s famous BurstBuckers™. With authentic 18% nickel silver base and cover, Elektrisola wire, accurate bobbins, slugs and screws, and sand casted Alnico-II magnets, the Ultra-III pickups replicate that classic “Patent Applied For” airy tone that defined rock and roll. The second system features Shadow™ Germany’s patented NanoMag™ pickup embedded discretely at the end of the fingerboard. Featuring three samarium cobalt magnets, an air coil, and active electronics, this low-impedance pickup captures all the subtle body acoustics and string harmonics. Together, you get powerful humbucker-driven rock crunch as well as shimmering acoustic-like tones and everything in-between.

One-Of-A-Kind Electrics Built-in: If you thought the Ultra-II was jam-packed with modern features, you won’t believe what Epiphone has designed into the Ultra-III. Built discretely into the bridge pickup mounting ring is a full-function, chromatic tuner. Push it’s ON/OFF button and sound is immediately muted when the tuner is activated. Eleven color-coded LED’s identify the note as well as whether it’s sharp, flat or in-tune. Also, to allow quick and seamless changes between each pickup system, the Ultra-III’s NanoMag Volume knob now doubles as an A/B switch. Just push it in and quickly toggle between Magnetic, NanoMag or both pickup systems with no delay and no “pop.” Two additional LED’s on the pickup mounting ring provide a visual indicator of which pickup system is active (Red=NanoMag; Blue-Magnetic or Red/Blue=Both).

Hook-Up Directly To Your Computer: The Ultra-III features three different outputs. By using the standard 1/4″ MONO output, both the humbuckers and NanoMag are mixed into one signal. When you plug another 1/4″ cable into the Ultra III’s STEREO output, the humbuckers are routed through one cable and the NanaMag the other. In this way, you can send the humbuckers to your favorite guitar amp and the NanoMag to the PA or an acoustic guitar amp. Using the A/B switch, you can now change “on-the-fly” between the two outputs. The third output is USB. Using a USB cable (included), you can plug directly into your computer and use guitar applications such as Native Instruments GuitarRig™ 4LE (software included, downloadable from Epiphone.com) to play your guitar through a variety of simulated amplifiers and effects while listening through your computer speakers or headphones. GuitarRig also features a recorder, a metronome, a tuner and more.

Great Tone Woods and Hardware: While the Ultra-III is packed with technology, it still maintains the same basic specifications that made Epiphone Les Paul’s the choice of so many guitarists including a solid mahogany body with glued-in mahogany neck and comfortable SlimTaper™ neck profile, a flame Maple veneer top and Rosewood fingerboard. The result is a modern guitar with that classic Les Paul tone and sustain. Like most Epiphone’s, it’s also equipped with Epi’s patent-applied-for LockTone ™ Tune-o-matic bridge and LockTone™ Stopbar tailpiece for increased sustain and string changing ease as well as quality Grover™ 16:1 machine heads for tuning accuracy and stability.

. If you want a versatile, professional instrument designed for live performance or studio and capable of both Les Paul crunch and real acoustic-like tones, the Epiphone Ultra-III is it!
